The snake is the most popular representative symbol of medicine, fertility, healing and evolution, like shedding old skin and emotions and transforming them into something bigger and better, also reminding you to stay connected to yourself.
I was inspired on one side by the “Francia erytrogramma”, a species of large, non-venomous, highly aquatic colubrid snake endemic to the coastal plains of the southeastern United States. Two subspecies are recognised, one of which has been declared “extinct” and the other of which, the “Rainbow Serpent”, the “World Creator”, is an important symbol of Aboriginal culture in central Australia.
The Rainbow Serpent or Rainbow Snake is an immortal being and a creating god in Aboriginal mythology. It is a popular image in Australian Aboriginal art. It is in the form of a rainbow and a snake. The connection between the snake and the rainbow suggests the cycle of the seasons and the importance of the seasons and water in human life. When a rainbow is seen in the sky, it is said to be the Rainbow Serpent travelling from one waterhole to another. This serpent plays an important role in fertility or creation ceremonies. Aboriginal people believe that the Rainbow Serpent places spirit children at waterholes where women can become pregnant by wading in the water. It is also associated with abundance of food through the multiplication of plants and animals, as well as community leadership and peacekeeping, and as the creator of man, it is the protector of the land, its people and the source of all life.
